Natalya Petrovna is adored and loved by her husband Islaev whilst also providing a secret and unfulfilled romantic focus for his best friend and Natalya's confidante, Rakitin. This love triangle is further complicated by her falling in love with her son's younger tutor Belyaev, and she competes for his affections with her young attractive ward, Verochka.
