METAMORPHOSIS

by Steven Berkoff, from the classic story by Franz Kafka
Saturday 3 to Saturday 10 June 2017
Mary Wallace Theatre

The arresting opening lines of both story and play describe how Gregor, a hitherto unremarkable young man, wakes up one morning to find himself transformed into.... well the literal translation from the German is, so I'm told, "a horrible vermin". Further description reveals that he has indeed become a giant cockroach. OK - that is the premise - and from there we discover how his family and employers react to Gregor's altered condition, and how their attitudes and behaviour alter as they become his carers, his defenders and, eventually, his jailers. A dark, funny and unexpected venture into the surreal.
