by John Ford
Directed by:
Saturday 19 to Saturday 26 April 2025
Mary Wallace Theatre

Performances are at 7:45pm on Saturday 19, Monday 21, Tuesday 22, Thursday 24, Friday 25 and Saturday 26 April. There is also a 3pm matinee on Sunday 20 April.

"Shall then, for that I am her brother born,
My joys be ever banished from her bed?"

As brother and sister, Giovanni’s and Annabella’s forbidden love leads inevitably to tragic consequences. ‘Tis Pity... is a high-Jacobean revenge tragedy - a searing exposition of incest, murder, adultery, and betrayal. This astonishing but rarely performed masterpiece offers verse to rival Shakespeare’s, tragic roles as challenging as Ophelia and Romeo - and a villain every inch as treacherous as Iago.

Guidance –This play explores adult themes and includes depictions of violence as well as exhibiting 17th century attitudes that may be abhorrent today.
