HAROUN AND THE SEA OF STORIES

by Salman Rushdie, Tim Supple and David Tushingham
Directed by:
Thursday 12 to Sunday 15 June 2014
Mary Wallace Theatre

Salman Rushdie's work of magic realism follows the young hero Haroun as he sets off on his journey atop a flying bird to save a princess, end a war of darkness, defeat an evil lord and bring happiness to his city. This hugely colourful production boasts plenty of action, song and original music, not to mention many imaginary lands, floating gardens and fairytale spiders! Haroun is a multi-faceted modern fable that combines elements of The Wizard of Oz, The Lord of the Rings, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and One Thousand and One Nights. Although on the surface a children's story, the play has plenty of references that will resonate with those of older years. Rushdie wrote the story for his son and it forms an allegory for many of the global problems we face today - most notably "what is the point of stories?"
