TOM AND VIV
by Michael Hastings
Saturday 17 to Saturday 24 September 2016
Mary Wallace Theatre
Exploring one of literature's most stormy relationships, between Tom (T. S. Eliot) and Viv (Vivienne Haigh-Wood). The play follows the turbulent and emotional conflict between this tragically mismatched couple. We follow them from their first meeting in Oxford in 1915 with Viv, the volatile daughter of an upper-class English family, confronting the socially awkward American poet. There then followed a whirlwind romance which led to the classic - marry in haste and repent at leisure. So did the marriage unravel? Was it Eliot's failure in not providing the support his wife desperately needed? Or were Viv's expectations too complex for Tom to understand?
