Vincent in Brixton

by Nicholas Wright
directed by Stephen Oliver

This smash hit of 2002 is set in the 1870s.  It explores the forgotten years of Van Gogh's life, when he was working for a London art dealer – well before he began the works which ensured his posthumous fame.  He is drawn to 87, Hackford Road, SW9 by the beautiful Eugenie, whose mother, Ursula, agrees to take him as a lodger despite her reservations.  The play is an imaginative, humorous and ultimately deeply moving study of what might happen when a charismatic and unconventional outsider comes into contact with a tight-knit family group.
